Spotlighting School Nurses: Coleen Doody
Today is a special day during Nurses Week 2023, where we take some time to celebrate our school-based professionals. National School Nurse Day recognizes the hard work of registered nurses (RNs) or licensed practical nurses (LPNs) who have completed additional training in school health and child development. School nurses play a crucial part in promoting the health and well-being of students by helping manage chronic conditions, providing first aid and emergency care, conducting health screenings, promoting healthy behaviors, and teaching classes about health-related topics like hygiene, nutrition, and puberty. Overall, school nurses are an essential part of the educational team that ensures students are healthy, safe, and ready to learn.
Spotlighting School Nurse Coleen Doody
In honor of National School Nurse Day, we are spotlighting one of the many amazing school nurses on our Amergis Educational Staffing team. Coleen Doody, who is currently a Health Office Nurse and Certified School Nurse at a Special Education Cooperative in Chicago, has been working with Amergis Staffing since 2018.
“Coleen is a fabulous employee and a tremendous asset to our clients, their students, the Community, our department, and [Amergis],” said Makayla Taylor, Amergis Staffing Business Development Manager.
Makayla describes Coleen as being a dedicated worker who is helpful, compassionate, and always willing to go the extra mile to help her students.
“Despite the overwhelming amount of work that everyone has to do, Coleen consistently finds ways to help in any way that she can. Her willingness to assist others and her commitment to educating others are unequaled. In addition, she is quick to respond and the first to volunteer when someone is in need,” Makayla described. “Staff members from her District, other Districts, and [Amergis] have all noted that Coleen’s skills are exemplary, she is one of the friendliest and most hardworking people you would ever meet, and she always goes the extra mile; with a smile on her face.”
Makayla also highlighted Coleen’s compassion, giving an example of the steps she takes to ensure all her students are cared for in the best possible way.
“Earlier this year, Coleen informed me that one of our 1:1 students would graduate in May of 2023 and hoped to attend college. While this is very exciting on many levels, as students with disabilities prepare to transition to adult life, many students leave without the self-awareness, self-advocacy skills, or self-confidence to navigate their new independence successfully, so Coleen came to me asking what we can do to ensure the student can transition into the next stage of life as safely, successfully and independently as possible. A truly successful transition process is the result of a comprehensive team that is driven by the dreams and desires of students to have the opportunity to achieve their goals. Not only do her efforts benefit the student, but they also set an example and ground us for our true mission and why we come to work every day,” Makayla explained.
Overall, “Coleen continues to do what she has always done best: care for our youth by making their health and safety a top priority,” said Makayla. “On behalf of the Chicago Educational Services Southeast Nursing Team, we thank Coleen for her essential role in supporting students’ mental, physical, and emotional health and putting them on a path to success.”
Join Amergis Staffing in thanking Coleen, and all the other dedicated school nurses across the country, for their continuous hard work!
